My Approach
Medication can play an important role in improving mental health and quality of life. While medications are not a cure, they can help reduce symptoms and support patients in fully engaging in therapy, relationships, work, and daily life.My goal is to provide thoughtful, individualized treatment while using the lowest effective level of medication whenever appropriate. As patients grow and progress, I also believe in carefully considering reduction or discontinuation of medications when clinically appropriate. My background in primary care provides additional insight into the connection between physical and mental health, including conditions such as sleep apnea and obesity that can significantly impact emotional well-being. I also have experience helping patients manage medication-related side effects, including the use of GLP-1 medications when appropriate.

GLP-1 Weight Management
GLP-1 medications are designed to mimic a natural hormone in the body that helps regulate appetite, blood sugar, and digestion. For many patients, these medications can reduce hunger, improve fullness after meals, and support meaningful weight loss when combined with appropriate nutrition, physical activity, and long-term lifestyle changes. Before specializing in psychiatry, I spent two years managing both type 1 and type 2 diabetes in primary care and became comfortable using GLP-1 medications early in their clinical use. In that setting, I saw not only improvements in blood sugar control, but also significant weight loss and broader benefits for overall health. Over time, I also saw how weight changes can affect mental health, self-esteem, impulse control, and the side effects of psychiatric medications. My background in both diabetes care and psychiatry gives me a unique perspective when working with patients who are struggling with weight, emotional eating, metabolic health, or weight gain related to psychiatric medications. GLP-1 medications are not a cure-all, but they can be a very helpful tool when used thoughtfully and alongside education, behavior change, and close medical follow-up.Emerging research suggests that GLP-1 receptor agonists are generally safe from a psychiatric perspective and may also have benefits for mental well-being.[1,2] Studies have not shown an increased risk of psychiatric adverse events overall, and early data suggest these medications may help improve quality of life, emotional eating, and weight gain associated with some psychiatric medications.[1,2] Researchers are also studying whether GLP-1 medications may have a role in conditions such as binge eating, substance use, and other disorders involving reward, cravings, or impulse control, although more evidence is still needed before drawing firm conclusions.[2]When appropriate, I offer GLP-1 treatment as part of a broader weight management plan that includes education around nutrition, exercise, sleep, and sustainable habits. My goal is to provide an affordable and thoughtful approach while also considering the unique psychiatric and medical needs of each patient.
